Games at the Expo
As well as traditional board and card games like Chess, Monopoly and
Scrabble, the Australian Games Expo features a wide range of Eurogames.
Also
known as Family Board Games, this genre of board games originated in Europe.
Typically, these games are relatively simple to learn and are based around
a definite theme, often historical in nature. Enormously popular in Europe,
these games are now played around the world.
Most Eurogames have similar characteristics:
- a high amount of player interaction,
- appeal to players of all ages,
- do not rely heavily on luck,
- have simple, but clever rules,
- game play is usually 1-2 hours, and
- the "roll & move" mechanic of games like Monopoly is
not usually seen.
The Australian Games Expo has secured official sanctioning for the Australian
Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne
championships. Three major Australian games wholesalers have sponsored
the tournaments, contributing the flights as well as five nights' accommodation
to enable the Australian champions to attend the World Championships in
Germany in October.
